Surface Laser Vision Correction

Our doctors perform Surface Laser Vision Correction, which is also known as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), where the laser energy used to reshape the cornea is applied directly to the corneal stroma without the creation of a flap, as in standard LASIK. With PRK, the risk of a flap complication is reduced to zero.

Why PRK versus LASIK?
Our doctors choose to perform Surface Laser Vision Correction (PRK) over LASIK. The doctors want to ensure the long-term stability of your eyes after the procedure, and with PRK, there is no incision (or flap) made into the cornea. Thus, the strength of the cornea is better retained.

The LADARVISION 4000 Excimer Laser: Safety
Our doctors use the Alcon LADARVISION 4000 flying spot Excimer laser system for the Surface Laser Vision Correction. The LADARVISION can perform both standard & Custom Laser procedures. This laser is FDA approved to treat Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism.

The LADARVISION flying spot laser can fully track and treat your eye despite the slightest eye movement during the procedure. This is accomplished by using an FDA approved Laser Tracking system developed by NASA.

During the Procedure
After your current refractive error is determined, you will be positioned under the laser. After the instillation of numbing eyedrops, your eyelid will be gently secured using a sterile speculum. Your surgeon will then polish the surface of your cornea with a special brush. The cornea is now ready for the laser application, which usually takes anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes. After the laser treatment is completed, the eye is rinsed and a contact lens is applied to the eye. The speculum is removed and the other eye is then treated.

After the Procedure
Following Surface Laser, the corneal surface must heal. This usually takes 4-6 days. While the visual recovery is longer in Surface Laser than Lasik, the results are as good or even better for some parameters. Over 98% see 20/40 or better after surgery.

PRK will correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, but a detailed examination is necessary to see if you are a candidate. Call now for a consultation!
